Founded by Dr Xavier Harvey

Dr Xavier Harvey established South West Colorectal Surgery as he recognised the community need for a service specialising in colorectal disease in the South West. Dr Harvey grew up in Western Australia and has since worked in metropolitan and regional centres throughout Australia and New Zealand and is the only surgeon with colorectal subspeciality living and working in regional Western Australia. He has seen the importance of specialist care being available close to home and is pleased to see South West Colorectal Surgery providing these benefits to the local community.

Dr Harvey is a highly qualified general surgeon with a subspeciality in colorectal surgery. After achieving Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), he completed a prestigious training program in colorectal surgery offered by the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ). This program included intensive clinical experience at leading hospitals in Auckland and Perth, alongside comprehensive academic studies.

Dr Harvey is passionate about serving regional communities. He’s currently the only CSSANZ member practising in South West Australia, offering both specialised care for colorectal conditions and a broad range of general surgery services.

Here’s how Dr Harvey can assist you:

  • Colonoscopy
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Pelvic floor surgery, including rectal prolapse
  • Sacral neuromodulation
  • Benign colorectal disease, including diverticular disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis
  • Proctology, including haemorrhoids, anal fissure and fistula
  • Intestinal failure (IF)

Dr Harvey is also a credentialled endoscopist and a member of multiple professional organisations, including the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA), the International Continence Society (ICS), and General Surgeons Australia (GSA).

Dr Harvey is a strong advocate for continuous learning and patient well-being. He holds a Master’s degree in Surgery (Surgical Outcomes) and has published research on improving surgical care, pelvic floor health, and service delivery in regional areas. He’s currently involved in a project to better understand patient quality of life after J-pouch surgery for ulcerative colitis.

He’s also actively involved in training future surgeons, equipping them with essential communication and professional skills through the Training in Professional Skills (TIPS) course offered by RACS. Additionally, he serves as an examiner for RACS clinical examinations for surgical registrars.

While colorectal surgery is Dr Harvey’s primary area of expertise, his curiosity extends beyond medicine. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and postgraduate qualifications in European languages and tropical medicine.

Outside of work, you might find Dr Harvey enjoying the active lifestyle of South West Australia with his partner (a local general practitioner), their children, and their kelpie companion.
